QUALIFICATIONS AND TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED
● Degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
● PC Skills, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
● Good knowledge of thermodynamics in plant performance
● Must have good analytical skills for events, trends, and patterns or able to do trouble shooting.
● Good technical report writing skills.
● Capable of doing root cause analysis and risk assessment
● Relevant previous Power Plant or Energy related Engineering experience an added
advantage.
● Knowledge of Vib1, Vib2, Vib3, Bearing Failure analysis, thermography, electrical motor
analysis, root cause analysis, basic Tribology and vibrations software would be an added
advantage.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
● At least 5 years’ experience in Plant Performance work
● At least 5 years’ experience in coal fired power stations
● Demonstrated experience in operation and maintenance of coal fired power stations with special
emphasis on problem analysis and solutions in this environment.
● Experience in plant efficiency optimisation
● Experience in auto control systems an added advantage
● Mechanical, Instrumental, Electrical interface – i.e. multi skilled
● Vibration capturing and monitoring of rotating equipment
● Capturing, processing and analysis of operational data
● Good knowledge of power plant systems
● Plant performance and optimisation
● Incident investigation
● Strong ability to communicate across multiple levels of Management
CORE FUNCTIONS:
 Advice on plant inspections outcomes to lessen defects contributing to poor plant performance
 Assess the power generation system equipment performance, providing technical advice to support
plant operating objectives, and supporting plant staff to monitor and improve unit efficiencies.
 Develop performance tests needed to assess equipment and process performance by comparing and
analyzing data on trends, shifts logs, and any abnormalities.
 Prepare reports and ensure they are properly submitted within the required timeframes.
 Assist Operations department in continually monitoring overall plant equipment performance to
recommend best operating practices and initiate changes to improve plant performance to ensure that
key energy consumption and production targets are met.
 Monitor plant parameters to optimise boiler/turbine/auxiliary plant performance
 Monitor operating and maintenance practices to ensure overall plant availability and reliability
 Monitor Turbine/Boiler/Auxiliary plant water losses for water use efficiency
 Carry out measurement and testing to calibrate Cation, Anion, Mixed bed and scrubber controls
 Identify Diepsloot water plant, Outside plant, Rand water and cooling water system performance
measurements problem areas
 Analyse start-up and shut down of Boiler/Turbine/Auxiliary plant equipment to ensure long term plant
health and identify any challenges that require attention.
 Capture all required performance data daily and analyse it to generate a report.
 Keep track of CM’s to investigate failures
 Assist with special testing of plant equipment
 Provide professional advice and assistance to all aspects of plant operation
 Lead and investigate plant deviations then provide corrective measures
 Be prepared to undergo identified relevant training initiatives
 Actively participate and encourage good housekeeping, teamwork and upholding of superior standards
and general maintenance in your plant

Performance Engineer
 Be fully conversant with & adhere to general and plant safety regulations
 Be flexible & willing to learn and assist in all aspects of operations & maintenance
 Propose plant modifications where needed
 Monitor overall water mass balance flow meter to identity water losses
 Operating and maintenance procedures drafting and revising
 Liaise with the primary energy department to ensure proper loading with available input energy

Plant Compliance Manager

QUALIFICATIONS AND TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED
● Minimum Advanced Diploma or preferably a Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or
Equivalent.
● Registered Professional Engineer with relevant or recognised Institutions e.g ECSA/ SAIMechE.
● Professional qualifications in HSE and Fire & Safety Management Systems.
● Must have a Government Certificate of Competency(GCC), non-negotiable.
● Solid understanding of power plant processes and turbo-generator / boiler plant and equipment.
● PC Skills, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, ACCPAC/SAGE, Maximo, OPSLOG Workflow.

FUNDAMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
● Extensive knowledge & understanding of OHS Act, Excavation Construction Regulations,
Power PFFR, PSR & ORHVS Regulations, OHS Act & Codes,
● In-depth knowledge of HSE and Plant Safety regulations in the energy sector or similar industry.
● Good crisis management and problem-solving skills.
● Good communication and awareness-raising skills.
● Able to multi-task, and manage multiple priorities in high pressure situations.
● Able to thoroughly conduct incident investigations

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
● Minimum 10 years’ experience in an Engineering or Management role, with 5 years post GCC
experience.
● Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Manager in a power generation industry or mining environment.
● Good knowledge and understanding of various types of plant derived through a combination of
practical experience and formal training.

 

CORE FUNCTIONS:

1. Safety, Health, and Environmental Standards.
 You will be the head of Safety, Health and Environmental divisions as well as responsible
for quality control and all Plant Safety Regulations statutory requirements.
 You will be required to develop, implement, and maintain a safety management system that
will ensure that the legal aspects and other requirements such as safe work procedures are
developed and complied with.
 Manage investigations regarding mechanical failures, incidents, and near-misses to
determine root causes and liaise with the department of employment and labour as
required.
 Manage plant investigations by the department of employment and labour Inspectors and
ensure reports or information provided as requested.
 Ensure compliance with the OHS Act regulations, such as the Pressure Equipment
Regulations, Electrical Machinery Regulations, Facilities Regulations, and others.
 Ensure compliance with the health and safety standards stipulated in the respective
regulations and the South African Bureau of Standards such as SANS 347, SANS 10142,
and the like.
2. Engineering
 Ensure risk assessments conducted to identify potential hazards related to mechanical
equipment and operations.
 Implement control measures when engineering changes are made.
 Keep technical records required by standard engineering practice or legal and other
requirements.
 Ensure that machinery is designed and fabricated according to standard engineering
practice, implementing engineering controls to ensure the safe operation of machinery, and
determining root causes of failures.
3. Operations
 Ensure that the machinery is operated within its design specifications.
 Conduct incident investigations and provide a report for any plant deviations, trips and load
loss then ensure remedial action or corrective measures are implemented.
 Ensure other legal appointments are done to assist GMR2.1 such as GMR 2.7 and 4.3.
 Ensure ash dams, cooling towers and other plant structures comply with legal requirements.

4. Maintenance
 Ensure the statutory machinery records are kept and maintained.
 Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

Ensure the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of maintenance, electrical
systems and equipment are compliant with safety requirements.
 Ensure regular inspections and testing of mechanical systems are done to identify potential
issues and ensure compliance with safety standards.
 Ensure safety policies and procedures are in place related to mechanical and electrical
engineering.
5. Quality
 Required to develop, implement, and maintain a quality management system to ensure that
work is done safely and complies with legal requirements.
 Required to implement risk mitigation strategies and ensure that appropriate safety
measures are in place.
 Ensure that all new installations meet safety and operational standards.
6. Management and Leadership
 Be available to address plant requirements when requested during weekends and after
hours.
 Actively participate in the preparation, construction, implementation and reporting of the
Annual Operating Plan.
 Control department overtime within specified limits in line with the BCEA requirements.
 Assume responsibility for comprehensive Department records and archives.
 Provide development plans, counselling, review feedback and identify training needs of
Team Members to ensure compliance.
 Be aware of and communicate the potential impacts of current and proposed legislative
requirements that may affect the business.
 Be aware of and pursue the objectives of the KPS Employee Equity Plan.
 Constructively participate and contribute to the annual budgeting process.
 Provide a written monthly report to the Exec Maintenance and Engineering Manager addressing
progress, current status and future projects. Where relevant, ensure inclusion of budgetary
impacts.
 Enforce discipline in the department and ensure compliance with company Disciplinary
Codes.
 Ensure company communications are effectively communicated to your team.
 Coordinate department administrative functions as required by HR/Payroll.
 Assume overall responsibility for effective manning of your department and take responsibility for
leave arrangements, plant cover, overtime management and disciplinary issues. Maintain an
accurate written record of your arrangements.
 Carry out timeous and meaningful performance reviews for your direct reports. Assist in providing
development plans, counselling, review feedback and identify training needs of your department.
 Actively participate and encourage good housekeeping, teamwork and upholding of superior
standards.
 Assume any other Exec managerial roles related to the position as required or instructed by the
