Plant Performance Engineer

Good general health, capable of accessing all parts of the plant in dusty and humid conditions

QUALIFICATIONS AND TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED
● Degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
● PC Skills, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
● Good knowledge of thermodynamics in plant performance
● Must have good analytical skills for events, trends, and patterns or able to do trouble shooting.
● Good technical report writing skills.
● Capable of doing root cause analysis and risk assessment
● Relevant previous Power Plant or Energy related Engineering experience an added
advantage.
● Knowledge of Vib1, Vib2, Vib3, Bearing Failure analysis, thermography, electrical motor
analysis, root cause analysis, basic Tribology and vibrations software would be an added
advantage.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
● At least 5 years’ experience in Plant Performance work
● At least 5 years’ experience in coal fired power stations
● Demonstrated experience in operation and maintenance of coal fired power stations with special
emphasis on problem analysis and solutions in this environment.
● Experience in plant efficiency optimisation
● Experience in auto control systems an added advantage
● Mechanical, Instrumental, Electrical interface – i.e. multi skilled
● Vibration capturing and monitoring of rotating equipment
● Capturing, processing and analysis of operational data
● Good knowledge of power plant systems
● Plant performance and optimisation
● Incident investigation
● Strong ability to communicate across multiple levels of Management
CORE FUNCTIONS:
 Advice on plant inspections outcomes to lessen defects contributing to poor plant performance
 Assess the power generation system equipment performance, providing technical advice to support
plant operating objectives, and supporting plant staff to monitor and improve unit efficiencies.
 Develop performance tests needed to assess equipment and process performance by comparing and
analyzing data on trends, shifts logs, and any abnormalities.
 Prepare reports and ensure they are properly submitted within the required timeframes.
 Assist Operations department in continually monitoring overall plant equipment performance to
recommend best operating practices and initiate changes to improve plant performance to ensure that
key energy consumption and production targets are met.
 Monitor plant parameters to optimise boiler/turbine/auxiliary plant performance
 Monitor operating and maintenance practices to ensure overall plant availability and reliability
 Monitor Turbine/Boiler/Auxiliary plant water losses for water use efficiency
 Carry out measurement and testing to calibrate Cation, Anion, Mixed bed and scrubber controls
 Identify Diepsloot water plant, Outside plant, Rand water and cooling water system performance
measurements problem areas
 Analyse start-up and shut down of Boiler/Turbine/Auxiliary plant equipment to ensure long term plant
health and identify any challenges that require attention.
 Capture all required performance data daily and analyse it to generate a report.
 Keep track of CM’s to investigate failures
 Assist with special testing of plant equipment
 Provide professional advice and assistance to all aspects of plant operation
 Lead and investigate plant deviations then provide corrective measures
 Be prepared to undergo identified relevant training initiatives
 Actively participate and encourage good housekeeping, teamwork and upholding of superior standards
and general maintenance in your plant
 Actively participate & contribute to the success of the company and its people by adopting and living
the values and principles of the company

Performance Engineer
 Be fully conversant with & adhere to general and plant safety regulations
 Be flexible & willing to learn and assist in all aspects of operations & maintenance
 Propose plant modifications where needed
 Monitor overall water mass balance flow meter to identity water losses
 Operating and maintenance procedures drafting and revising
 Liaise with the primary energy department to ensure proper loading with available input energy
